This month we're featuring CCA, California College of the Arts (cca_jma_studio)! Just in time to collaborate with them for Metalsmithing Day 2023!

"CCA was founded in 1907 by Frederick Meyer with craft at its core. We are a nonprofit college with 23 undergraduate and 11 graduate programs that support an international population of students. Students’ education combines interdisciplinarity opportunities with deep expert knowledge in each of the diverse programs.

As individuals we have identities, lived experiences, and inherited histories that allow us to tell unique stories, lift up concerns, and share knowledge. In the Jewelry and Metal Art Program at CCA we help students discover their artistic identity and help them understand how to share their stories through artwork. We learn not only from the faculty, but from each other in our courses."

Virtual Livestream with Uli Rapp | 12:00–12:45 PM

Join us on Saturday, April 22 between 10:00 AM–5:00 PM for a special Trunk Show featuring the work of Uli Rapp. Uli will be virtually present at 12:00 PM via live-stream. She’ll be giving a short talk and visitors can ask questions about her work or specific pieces.

Uliʼs fabulous pieces are produced in Amsterdam, by hand and with love by Uli and her team. They are worn all over the world and can be found in permanent collections of international museums and private collectors. They are sold at shows and galleries in Paris, Miami, and Dubai.

Uli’s necklaces, brooches, and earrings interpret a love for antique gemstones and pearls contrasting with chunky chains. All pieces are skillfully handmade in screen print on lightweight soft materials. The combination of a contemporary artist’s tools with the hint of past splendor makes for titillating jewelry: conversation pieces for bold wearers like famous Architect Zaha Hadid, Designer Nathalie Rykiel, or Boy George.

They are looking to hire 2 or 3 part-time metal jewelry teachers at Studio One. They have a state-of-the-art metal jewelry lab. Teachers usually teach anywhere from 1 class a week to 3 classes a week (5 hours a week, up to 20 hours a week) based on the individual's availability. It is a perfect job to balance with creating your own art, running your own business as an artist, or teaching at other art studios.

Calling all bay area enamelists and metal artists for a rare workshop opportunity:

The Language of Enamel, A Master Class with Ukrainian Enamelist Oleksii Koval

The Enamel Department of The Crucible, an Oakland, CA based Industrial arts facility, is pleased to sponsor a 5-day master workshop with Ukrainian enamelist, Oleksii Kovall.

The dates: M-F, March 27-31, 10 Am to 6 PM

The place: The Crucible, 1260 7th St., Oakland CA

In this workshop Oleksii will be going through step-by-step processes of image transfer, preparation for copper etching on larger copper plates, etching the plates using 2 types of etching process, and then enameling and otherwise embellishing the plates with decals, gilding, and metal finishes. Students will be able to use the copper plates in a printing press to created images on water color paper that can then be colored.

Oleksii Koval is from Kiev and has exhibited his monumental enamel works all over the world. He has drawn inspiration from many sources including nature, landscape, and his rich Ukrainian cultural heritage. Before his workshop at The Crucible he will be giving a presentation about his life and work. March 26- time and place TBA

If you haven't seen it already, we're featuring Academy of Art University as February's metal arts program of the month!

"We offer a wide range of classes that cover traditional techniques like wax carving and casting, forging and forming, welding, stone setting, enameling and papermaking. Students can combine these techniques with contemporary technology in our laser cutting, 3D printing and electronics classes. Our students also have the opportunity to take classes in other departments such as fashion or industrial design. AAU offers the only accredited, fully online Jewelry and Metal Arts degree in the country.

Research is key for our students to understand how their own work fits within an historical context. Our students study the history of metal sculpture and jewelry and follow contemporary artists who work with similar materials and techniques. As our students learn a wide variety of new skills, we encourage them to gather inspiration in order to design and work conceptually, so their pieces convey a deeper meaning. The goal for many of the student’s larger projects is to create show-stopping pieces that they might envision on a runway or in a gallery."

We are happy to announce our January school of the month: Silvera Jewelry School. From beginners to professionals, Silvera offers a range of classes for any skill level.

"Silvera Jewelry School offers both online and in-person classes, and many of our classes are both! We have 9 in person desks that are fully equipped, and our classes tend to have a maximum of 15-18 students so we can spend time with each student individually. They share live magnified demonstrations on our big screen tv with up to 9 more students online. Our classes include handouts, recordings of the live classes, and some materials.

It’s our mission to help students to learn traditional and contemporary jewelry techniques, using home studio friendly tools and chemicals, so that they can easily continue to work at home.

Our school was started by Joe and Anat Silvera, who have been teachers since 2002 and the 90s, respectively. Jenn Parnell Kirkpatrick joined in 2019 and we all became joint partners, running the school together, in 2021."
