On March 31st, the San Francisco Metal Arts Guild

On March 31st, the San Francisco Metal Arts Guild held our annual gathering for Metal Artists, Jewelry Artists, makers and craftspeople from the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. Our co-hosts at California College of the Arts ( @ccafinearts and @ccajmarts ) created a bright and excellent space for demonstrations, and a great viewing space for presentations. It was an excellent day to gather, meet and learn about sustainability in the jewelry and metal arts field!

We want to extend a huge thank you to our host @arimacurtis and our presenters Alexandra Hart @alexandrahartmfa , Joe Silvera from @silverajewelryschool , Ana Brazaityte from @trussandore , Adam Clark from Scintillant Studios, Ryan Peterson from Indiana University and Nikitha Yelchuru from @papersweetly !

Ryan, a doctoral candidate at Indiana University, is a pioneer in Upper Great Lakes archaeology. His journey through 6,000 years of copper working legacy is a blend of traditional methods and cutting-edge technology, revealing the mysteries of Archaic Hunter-Gatherers.

Ryan will be presenting "Unveiling the Copper Veins: A Journey through 10,000 years of Metallurgy in the Northern Lake Superior Basin, from Ancient Craftsmanship to Modern Challenges."

Meet Adam Clark, the passionate founder and owner of Scintillant Studio! With a background rooted in Rhode Island, Adam earned his Bachelor of Fine Art degree from the prestigious Maine College of Art. Metal Arts Guild is proud to announce that Joe Silvera ( of @silverajewelryschool ) is joining our presenter lineup for Metalsmithing Day 2024, held in collaboration with California College of the Arts ( @ccajmarts )!

JOE SILVERA and his wife Anat are founders of the Silvera Jewelry School. His classes provide a great foundation in the fundamental skills of jewelry, mixed with laughter and creativity.

Originally a fine arts major, Joe switched majors during college and graduated with a BFA in Metalsmithing in 1991. He then became an apprentice and went to work in the jewelry trade, first as a goldsmith, then as a wax carver. He sold his jewelry for decades at craft shows, galleries and shops. Joe has over 30 years of jewelry and teaching experience.

He is the author of the jewelry books, Soldering Made Simple: Easy Techniques for the Kitchen-Table Jeweler, which has sold over 45,000 copies, and Soldering Beyond the Basics.

Joe has also contributed articles to jewelry magazines and is a presenter on several jewelry dvds and online videos, including Soldering Made Simple and Soldering Beyond the Basics. Joe has been a guest on television shows like Beads, Baubles and Jewels and Jewel School.

His favorite technique is lost wax casting, with which he likes to carve detailed jewelry scale sculptures of animals, flowers and more.

We recently checking in with former Metal Arts Guild President Alison Antelman ( @aantelman ) to see what's new with her work and what she is excited about in 2024.

"Now that 2023 is put to bed, and the anticipation of traveling to shows and creating new jewelry fills my mind, I await a variety of opportunities. All my art fair applications are in, I’ve already taught Custom Clasps online in January, I’m finishing up some new pieces and excited to start others, my work is in a gallery called Sun & Dust on Canyon Road in Santa Fe, Artful Home the online gallery has requested a pair of earrings for potential use in their print catalogue and I’ll exhibit again this year at the Santa Fe Artist Market beginning in late March. The extending daylight hours and everything I've set in motion awaits their blooms for the year."

The featured image is Square Arch. Here's more about it in Alison's words: "Necklace: Square Arch, part of my newest collection called Architectural Layers is made with a series of fold-formed hollow pods in varied configurations joined with Gem Silica in quartz, cabochons, a stalactite slice and druzy, natural surface black jade, faceted tourmaline and black and white diamonds."

The final photo is of the gorgeous box clasp for Alison's Mini Metro Bracelet. Here's more about it in her words: "My newest Mini-metro Bracelet is set with aquamarine, sapphires and diamonds. This bracelet took about four months to fabricate as each pod is individually formed, soldered and hinged in groups of three. The box clasp is also hand fabricated, as shown in the images."

Metalsmithing Day is Sunday March 31, 2024!

Come join MAG, CCA, and all local jewelers, metalsmiths, and metal-curious folks for MAG's Metalsmithing Day!
This is a great event where you can meet other artists, find out more about the field, and learn from lectures and demonstrations that run throughout the entire day!
Whether you are new to the field, a student, a professional, or a long time hobbyist, all are welcome. All ages are welcome. MAG and CCA are committed to creating an inclusive and diverse metalsmithing day experience for all.

We are busy at work gathering our presenters for both lectures and demonstrations around the topic of Sustainability! We will be looking at our field through the lens of personal, ethical, cultural, and studio practices and how they relate to us all being able to live and create in a sustainable way.

Reposted from @accigallery Meet the Artist: Sarah Liron. Sunday, January 14 from 1 - 4pm. Sarah Liron is a local bay area metal artist and member of Metal Arts Guild!

I personally make each item of jewelry, using a variety of metalsmithing processes. Sterling silver and gold are the primary metals used and are often mixed within the same piece. I use varied techniques to create interesting textures and finishes, such as etching metal in acid or roller printing handmade paper or lace on top. I like to collect and incorporate different materials I’ve collected like old lace and art paper and use gemstones to bring color and dimension to some designs. I also use photography in my work, taking pictures of elements from the natural world and converting them into etched metal.

Given that my jewelry is handmade, no two pieces are exactly the same. Slight differences in the texture, dimensions or placement of materials ensure that your item will be unique and reflect the craftsmanship that has gone into its creation. If there is something specific that you would like to see in your piece, please let me know and I will try my best to accommodate your ideas.

Our featured teacher this November is Davide Bigazzi Studios ( @davidebigazzistudio16 ) - where craftsmanship meets creativity, and you get to be the artisan! Davide not only offers a dazzling array of unique pieces but also invites you to immerse yourself in the world of jewelry-making through their hands-on classes.

"I started teaching jewelry and metalsmithing classes at Davide Bigazzi Studio in Menlo Park in 2007. I find that project-based, in-person learning works best, and so I devised an individualized approach that encourages each student to pursue their creativity and uncover their own style while learning the art of jewelry metalsmithing."

"With only 5 individuals in each group class, I guide each student on their journey of creating beautifully finished pieces of jewelry and holloware. As they design and create their pieces, my students learn how to work with silver, gold, and various stones while utilizing a range of fabrication techniques, soldering, wax carving, basic stone setting (prongs, bezels, flash setting), chasing and repousse, Keum-Boo, patina creation, texturizing, and much more."

Whether you're a beginner looking to create your first piece or a seasoned jeweler wanting to refine your skills, these classes have something for everyone. You'll be amazed at what you can create with the guidance of passionate instructors.
