MAG BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING MINUTES - Monday, November 17, 2003

PRESENT:

PRESIDENT'S REPORT
AG has printed 200 copies of the MAG membership form, anddistributed some to those present.  Absent board members shouldcollect theirs before or during the next meeting.    AA, SA, DB, HEB, AC, DL,NS and AT.
TREASURER'S REPORT

Discussion on the 2004 budget will be postponed until the nextmeeting (January).  Meanwhile, everyone with a budget line itemshould review the previously circulated figures and check foraccuracy.    All.  WS to email board.

AG to submit estimate for her expenses.Accounts summary:  business checking $9,610.29;  business savings $1,866.91.  Total cash accounts:  $11,477.20.  Investment account:  $13,707.39.  WS will report on otherinvestment opportunities carrying a higher interest rate atthe Jan. meeting.  WSProtocol for handling memberships:  WS will email EO names ofnew members;  EO will email names to AA (for GUILDLETTER)  andAG for email list. LECTURES, WORKSHOPS

Discussion of Reactive Metals workshop is held over till Jan.Maria Cristini workshop:  Board will discuss possibly offeringthis to MAG members at a cost of $25 each.  We need a minimum of20 people to meet the presenters' $500 fee.  DB to check outCristini's materials and (preferably free) venue.   AG, DB

San Quentin workshop:  DL to followup and report in Jan.  DLAG reported on a successful bracelet-making community event inJapantown organized by Dawn Nakanishi.Cooperative event with the Enamels Guild:  SH to researchpossibilities, e.g. collaborative projects, joint meeting etc.   SH William Clark illustrated lecture:  JCG to followup. EXHIBITIONS

MAG booth at ACC show:  the finalized letter and criteria willbe sent off 11/18, together with HEB's resume.                               ACTION:  AGBolinas Museum show:  WS, who has excellent contacts with themuseum's board and staff, reported that the museum has ongoingexhibitions, featuring a California/N. Bay/coast theme, and thatthe process of submitting a proposal, getting it reviewed andapproved, and organizing a show could take 2 years.  Possiblesubjects could be "Bay Area Metal Artists" or "Unlock YourHeart With Metal Art".  Further discussion needed at nextmeeting.   AG WS

HOSPITALITY
Re-circulated a PC invitation to the Dec. 7 event.  This willsolicit "a wrapped, handmade gift or useful item for your studio".  Directions to DLs studio won't be included.  RE willget this printed on card stock, get labels from EO and mail.Since AG will be late to the event, DB will act as hostess.RE will ask Board members to sign up for side dishes. OTHER ITEMS

DL needs a volunteer to help organize the library.  AG to email membersVoicemail:  should this be continued?  AG will ask HEB how manycalls we get.  WS will check out cheaper plans.   AG, HEB, WS "Enameling with the Professionals" by Lilyan Bachrach:  werecommended buying this for the MAG library, and will discussfurther in Jan.  MAG members can also buy this book at thereduced rate of $40. MAG BOARD MEETING MINUTES - October 20, 2003

PRESENT:

PRESIDENT'S REPORT

Emiko Oye has volunteered to join the Board as Membership chair (SA moved and DB seconded a motion to approve, passed unanimously).  WS will forward copies of checks from new members to EO and to AA for the newsletter. A new list of board members was distributed, now amended to include new job titles (EO Membership, NS Slide Library) and RE’s new address. The new membership form was circulated.  AG will add a note about our slide library, and a brief request for (nonprofit) donations.  She will print 200 copies
for distribution. AG

VICE PRESIDENT'S REPORT

There were five applicants for the first MAGGrant, juried by DB, AG and Julia Turner.  The work was of high quality, and the winner was Cnute Sweeney (CCA), with an honorary award going to Nicole Verhalen (Woodside Priory). AG designed the award certificate (needs a gold seal). Slides of the two winners’ work will appear in the GUILDLETTER, and a news item will be submitted to SNAG. AA, JCG

After some discussion, the Board decided to fund next year’s award out of savings and income from applicants.  The 2004 award will again be for student work (no age limit, just a valid student I.D.) Applications will be solicited in the Feb.-Mar- newsletter, deadline May 1.
We need a current list of schools and instructors. AA, DB, JCG

2002-4 budget:  this was circulated  for review, and will be discussed at the Nov. meeting. AG

TREASURER'S REPORT

MAG has $10,087.35 in checking, $1,866.68 in savings and $13,707.35 in CDs. WS will research  higher income accounts for some of the savings, longer-term CDs (e.g. 2 years), other savings vehicles, e.g. the Business Secure card, or lenders, e.g. B. of A. or a credit union. He reassured the Board that no-one holding a MAG credit card would suffer damage to their personal credit rating e.g. through late payment, and that the cards have MAG’s tax # on them.  WS

HOSPITALITY

RE reported on possible venues for the holiday party.  It was decided not to pursue Daryl Rush or the Crucible, but to accept DL’s offer of her studio.  The event will be Dec. 7, 5-8pm, and will include a gift exchange and DL’s demo of copper welding. RE will work on the invitation card card. RE

MEMBERSHIP/SLIDE LIBRARY

AG will send MAG scrapbooks of old photos etc.  to NS to keep up to date and bring to MAG events.  JCG’s  membership letters were approved.   The new membership campaign will consist of a notice/form in the Nov/Dec.. newsletter and a reminder PC designed by SH in early Jan  (DB will  mail).  JCG will mail a letter in mid Feb. to people who haven’t renewed, saying their membership (and newsletters)
will be cut off effective Mar. 1.  Different letters will go out in Nov. to lapsed members inviting them to rejoin (NS will send JCG a list from 2002-3), and to a select list of teachers and gallery owners who aren’t members inviting them to join. DB, AG, SH, NS, JCG

WEBSITE

SH has made changes suggested by board members.  AG will ask her to make additional changes: to put work of deceased members in a special “in memoriam” section, update the calendar section monthly or whenever appropriate, and add a bar tab about members’ work to each page of the site.  Members should be reminded to update the photos of their work.   AB, SH, all

EXHIBITIONS

1.  ACC show:  AG reported that ACC has stopped donating free booths, but (after discussion with Reid McMillan) might be open to giving us free table space for  MAG materials.  AG
2.  Bolinas:  no news - revisit in Nov. WS, AG,
4.  Portfilio Is.  Premature to hold a MAG show at this time.
5.  Berkeley Art Center, Live Oak Park.  Revisit in Nov.   AA
6.  MAG invitational show.  SA and AC will pursue possible show for next June, either     at the Crucible, Richmond Art Center, Berkeley Art Center, Collectors’ Gallery, or  other location.  SA, AC

RENTAL OF MAG DISPLAY CASES

DL reported that we have 6 wall mounted cases 24”x 24”x 6”, 6 rectangular cases 36”x25”x 81/2” and 6 wooden pedestals for these.  After discussion it was decided to allow members to rent them, depending on availability, for $10 a case per week, plus a (refundable) $100 deposit per case. Members must pick up (from DL) and return and  be responsible for any damage.  This information will go out on our website and in the newsletter.  Next May the cases are being loaned to the Crafts & Cultural Arts Center in the CA. State Building in Oakland for a show. DL will draw up a rental contract.  DL, AA. SH

GUILDLETTER REPORT

AA will email AC and EO to request brief information about them for publication. The board approved AA’s request to include the Berkeley Artisans Holiday Open Studio map in the Nov/Dec. issue, which she would stuff, and which not involve additional postage.  Any future requests from non-profits would be evaluated on a case by case basis. AG reorganized the Board’s list of goals for 2003, which will
be published as a President’s letter.  It will include a request for volunteers (DB) will be the contact), for help with our website, the newsletters (writers and researchers), PR and student outreach.     AA, DB, AC, EO

LECTURES, MEETINGS, EVENTS

1.  Reactive Metals workshop:  no news - revisit in Nov.  AA
2.  Peter Shemonsky lecture at Butterfields:   no news (he’s away) - revisit in Nov. DB
3.  Community outreach:  DL will follow up on a request for a metalsmithing demo from an instructor at San Quentin who visited the BigLittle show.  DL

AG will join Kristina Kada and Dawn Nakanishi in a bracelet-making demo. in Japantown:  she will report back in Nov.  AA will include in the newsletter. AG, AA

TEE SHIRTS

The Board agreed these will be sold for $12 ($15 if we ship).  Venues - MAG events, newsletter, and on our website.  DB will provide photograph for our website, and SA will try to download a photo from the printer’s website. AA, SA, DB, SH

LIBRARY

The Board approved $60 for the purchase of Hannelore Gabriel’s book “The Jewelry of Nepal”.

MAG BOARD MEETING MINUTES - September 22, 2003

PRESENT

ABSENT:  Harriete Estel Berman, Deb. Lozier, Maja, Anastasia Trainer. The meeting opened at 7:10pm.

PRESIDENT'S REPORT
New board members (AC, RE and WS) were welcomed.  The MAG notebookswere reorganized, including a 2003-4 calendar, a membership leafletand MAG notepaper.  Additional postcards were passed out for distribution at craft fairs, metal-related stores etc. Our meetingswould continue to be held on Monday evenings.ACTION:  members to pass out postcards.  Whoever gets these re-printed should check for quality.  WS to send out the new MAG logo.

NEW BOARD POSITIONS:  Treasurer - WS.  Hospitality - RE. Recording Secretary (Acting) - JCG.

GOALS FOR 2003-4

1.  Do another MAG grant.  DB.

2.  Increase membership. AG, NS, JCG.

3.  Try to get a (free) MAG booth at the next ACC show in SF - Harriete Estel Berman has offered to head an organizing    committee.   AG and HEB

4.  Get more member news and contributions (articles) in the  Guildletter.  Publish more opportunities for members e.g.    calls for entry, member features.  AA, all.    WS to email the Artdead list to interested people.

5.  Make potential and actual members more aware of MAG's value, and create additional value via links to our website,    manufacturer discounts etc.

6.  One very good exhibition, more broadly based and possibly not juried (SA).

7.  Find someone to take over slide library from SA

8.  Increase student involvement in MAG (RE).

9.  Grow MAG's funding (WS).

10. Collaboration with other guilds e.g. in MAG social events.

11. Encourage better use of MAG's website, especially the bulletin section.  MAG board members were invited to submit photographs and website addresses.  SH.

12. Beef up existing procedure for getting membership renewals, expand outreach to the metals community.   JCG, NS, all.

13. Get a PR person.

14. Do more community outreach, e.g. workshops for children, convicts etc.  Try to get grants (and publicity) for this.

15. Work towards making MAG a more solid nonprofit, with its own permanent space VICE PRESIDENT'S REPORTJurying for the first MAG grant will be on 9/29.  Five peopleapplied, and the winner will receive $300.

 

TREASURER'S REPORT
The old checking account has been closed, and a new one opened(still Wells Fargo).  Currently there is $14,627 in checking(about $3,600 will go to Deb Lozier for exhibition expenses).We have $1,866.45 in savings and $13,707.35 in CDs.  WS islooking at different interest-bearing accounts, and has boughtnew software (Quick Books).   WS

HOSPITALITY
RE and AG will check on possible sites for the holiday party- the new Crucible premises and Daryl Rush's studio.  We willinvite different guilds to our social events, starting withthe N. California Enamel Guild. RE, AG

MEMBERSHIP
Special thanks to NS for the new membership roster.  The nextedition should include MAG's website on the front cover.NS will research other (cheaper?) printers.   ACTION:  NSBeefing up membership renewals:  AG circulated a new membership leaflet with renewal form.  SH will design a reminder PC togo out around Jan.  Cutoff for receiving the Guildletter willbe the Feb/Mar. issue, to be mailed at the end of Jan. 2004.JCG will work on a series of membership letters.  Reminderswill also go on the website and in the Guildletter.  NS, SH, AA, JCGStreamlining the membership process, WS will deposit checks,and scan/email the membership form to NS and AA.  This will betried as an experiment.

WEBSITE REPORT
Overall, the website was praised as excellent.  A few minorproblems were reported, e.g. with one of the links, it'ssometimes hard to find people's work, we need more links, andwebmaster should remove photos of work done by non/lapsedmembers.  SH asked the board to review the website and emailher any comments.  all

AG reported a request by Deb Lozier to include a memorial forCarl Jennings, with possible links to a national website.  Theboard voted to include one photo of his work rather than aspecial tribute.  SH, LOZIER

SHOWS & EXHIBITIONS

1.  SA reported that Mary Ellen of the Collectors Gallery would like another MAG show, with emphasis on sales.  The board    recommended she contact MAG members directly rather than making this a MAG-sponsored event.  SA

2.  MAG at ACC:  yes!  AG, HEB

3. Possible future sites:  

(a)  Bolinas Art Museum (must book 18 months ahead).  WS   
(b)  Live Oak Park - Berkeley Art Center.   
(c)  Another national show.   
(d)  Carl Jennings retrospective.  AG, LOZIER   
(e)  A collaborative show with another guild, e.g. enamels, blacksmiths.

GUILDLETTER

SNAG

1.  The board congratulated Christine Dhein for her organization of successful workshops for the May conference, which raised about $7,000 for MAG, and for her promise to create guide-lines for future events.  This will be reported in the    Guildletter.  AG will check whether contributor Frei Borel was thanked.  AA, AG, DHEIN

2.  The board decided not to print any more "girly T-shirts" until  the larger sizes had been sold.  These should be promoted in the Guildletter and on our website.  AA, SH

MISCELLANEOUS

1.  AG reported her roommate was professionally trained in working  with nonprofits.  The board expressed interest in inviting her to future meetings e.g. to discuss increasing membership, investments, grant-writing etc.  NS suggested also inviting participation of Maria Cristini to help develop a MAG vision.  AG, NS
2.  The board decided not to make duplicates of the 150 slides    from the BigLittle show for our slide library, but if possible    to get a disk made.  LOZIER

MINUTES OF MAG BOARD MEETING December 2, 2002

The meeting was called to  order at 7pm

PRESIDENT'S REPORT

Aimee thanked the Board for its great participation, but askedwe keep the noise level down and let people speak uninterrupted.

The site visit to Hessel Studios is confirmed for 3/23/03, 10am-4pm.  Cost will be $95.  Aimee is not being paid for organizing this.MAG postcard.  The draft of this combination post- and calling-card designed by Angela was circulated.  People would like tosee a horizontal design for the front, with the words MetalArts Guild accompanying the logo.  We'd also like to see 2-3alternative fonts for the back.  Heading should read Resourcesfor Metal Artists.  Foot:  Artists Making it in Metal Since1951.

ANGELA - please e-mail the Board via pdf file.

AG reported persistent e-mail problems (Note:  as of 3/3 theseappear to have been corrected).

TREASURER'S REPORT
DB reported we have a CD balance of $13,521.03, a checkingaccount balance of $2,557,10, and a savings balance of $1,862.In six weeks time we'll get a (no interest) MAG credit card.Allison and Neela will get copies.

SNAG 2003
Christine reported plans for 2 pre- and 3 post-conferenceworkshops, plus plans to publicize additional workshops beingoffered by CCAC and the Revere Academy.

Pre-conference: 
A 2-day symposium consisting of 8 overlappinglectures.  People could either take 1 or 2 days, and enrollmentwill be limited.  In the A group:  Charles Lewton-Brain (benchtricks), Kris Patzlaff (graphic surface treatments), MarilynDaSilva and Curtis Arima (surface metal coloration) and TeresaLovering-Brown (tinsmithing).  In the B group:  Rhonda Coryell(gold granulation), Sandra Enterline (hollow forms), CatherineHylands (thick bezels for unusual stones) and Jack DaSilva(metalsmithing).  Title will probably be "Artists Making itin Metal".  Cost:  $150 (2 days) or $80 (1 day). Hours:  9am-5pm each day.  Lunch will be provided.  Enrollmentcaps will depend on info. about additional costs (rental ofvideo cameras, screens and 2 setups, plus live feed, and lunchcosts).   CHRISTINE, ALLISON - to check on additional costs.AA offered to operate one of the video cameras.

Second pre-conference workshop will be a 3-day workshop onsurface patterns given by Carol Webb.  Cost:  $395.Post-conference:  Gold granulation (Rhonda Coryell), $395 fora 3-day workshop (plus $100 materials fee).  Maximum:  10-12 people.  Location:  her studio.

Recipe for Success (Harriete Estel Berman),2-days.  Put Your Action Where Your Vision is:  MariaCristini and Barbara Wieland-Mark.  One day, 10am-3pm.  $75.

Location for these workshops:  undetermined, unless otherwisenoted.  Possible locations are the new Crucible studios in W.Oakland or Ft. Mason.

Publicity:  copy for a brochure about these workshops will goto the designer 12/3.  NEELA - please publicize the finaldetails in the next issue of GUILDLETTER.

OTHER CONFERENCE DETAILS
Tour of religious buildings with interesting metalwork (to beorganized by JCG).  This will be on the Wed. beginning theconference, and should last a max. of 5 hours.  JCG will checksuitable places, eg Grace and St. Mary's Cathedrals, TempleEmanu-El, Mission Dolores and St. Gregory of Nyssa.

T-Shirts:  SA has printing quotes (under $1.00)  Her designer is working on different designs.  More details at a later meeting.

Giveaways:  we debated the pros and cons of magnets, temporarytattoos or pins, but doubted the value to MAG of this extrawork and cost.  SHANA - check with Elizabeth S. about this.

Volunteers:  SA has offered to be volunteer coordinator, butwould like additional help to organize subgroups of peopleneeded, eg for the Connections Room.

WEBSITE
SH will begin work in January.  DB and Julia will collect oldinformation from Suzanne.  New membership chair:  AA (unless sheexchanges with NS, or another person is found).

EXHIBITIONS
SA has e-mailed NAG membership about the \'snag\n exhibitionnext May 2-June 29.  She has extended the deadline for entriesuntil Friday, 12/5:  slides should be sent/delivered to her.So far, about 15 entries have been received, but more areexpected this week. 

Jurying will be this Sunday 12/8.Featured artists:  shows will start after the SNAG show.NEELA - check with SA and put information in next GUILDLETTER.

Other shows:  There may be a "past presidents" show in February,echoing Presidents' Day.  DB is helping with this.Long term:  MAG will have a case for featured artists' work allyear at the Collectors' Gallery.

GUILDLETTER
AG reported that NS would like to relinquish the editor's job and take another Board position.  AA offered to become editor,effective January, helped by JW (and JCG as backup).ALLISON to talk to NEELA about possible position swap.

MEMBERSHIP
This is now at a high of 142.  AH's leaflet was distributed.

LECTURES, MEETINGS, EVENT
SPlans were approved for a 2-day workshop given by ReactiveMetals.  A representative would waive the presenters' fee,but would need transportation (road?) to and from Sedona, AZ,lodging, food.  He'd bring 5 anodyzers with him.  Tentativecost:  $200-$225, plus materials fee, for max. of 15 people.Possible location:  Reed Easley's studio.  SHANA to researchcosts, expenses. The event would be scheduled after the SNAGconference.

Florence Resnikoff has agreed to do a lecture on the historyof jewelry (April).  Needed:  a location.

Peter Shemonsky (Butterfields) will lecture on Tuesday, Jan. 21on estate jewelry.  People will be invited to bring (preferablyantique) examples for appraisal.  Location:  Butterfield'sAuction Room.  NEELA - for GUILDLETTER?

HOLIDAY PARTY
JCG reported on plans for this 12/8 event.  AG will offerthe host, Adam Clark, a free MAG membership.  CHRISTINE - offered 4 additional chairs.  JCG will provide 2.

MISCELLANEOUS
Velvet da Vinci has donated a display case to MAG, which iscurrently with Deb Lozier.Cases are being made for the "big LITTLE" show by Susan Galbraith and others.  These could be rented out later byMAG to members.  We may need storage space for these.JCG reported that Tex Gieling is being given a special awardat the 2003 SNAG conference.
