Mission Statement:
The Metal Arts Guild of The Bay Area, a non-profit organization,
focuses on promoting the recognition of metalwork as an art
form and offering Bay Area jewelers and metal artists a network
of information, education and support.
History:
The Metal Arts Guild (MAG) is an independent, non-profit, educational
organization of people who are skilled, interested, or share
in the production and exhibition of metals. It was founded in
1951 by a small group of artists working in the relatively new
field of art jewelry and metal. Early members included Margaret
de Patta, merry renk, Francis Spensen, Byron Wilson, Vera Allison,
Bob Winston, Irena Brynner, Peter and Virginia Macchiarini and
Florence Resnikoff.
After experimenting with different categories of membership,
the Guild offered membership to everyone interested in art metals,
whether they were artists, teachers, students, hobbyists or
collectors.
MAG began sponsoring juried exhibitions from 1951
onwards, participating in shows put on by the San Francisco
Art Commission, Bay Area museums, Fort Mason, and currently
at such locations as the Oakland Museum's Collectors Gallery
and the Richmond Art Center.
We support the work of outstanding metal
artists by awarding prizes at MAG shows, and by direct purchase
or acquisition of members' work.
