Urban Renaissance:
New Visions of Jewelry and Sculpture

What does it mean to live, work, dress and move in today’s urban environment?

“Urban” means many things today: cosmopolitan and sophisticated, popular culture and ethnic diversity, street savvy and fast pace living, and museums, shops and a multitude of architectural styles. Our cities throb with energy, creativity, and diversity -- 5-star restaurants, upscale fashion, high tech, and a banquet of cultural wealth contrasts with congestion, pollution, homelessness, and garbage-ridden alleyways.

Urban Renaissance explores these contrasts through the use of materials, form and construction, from
objects to environmental installations to heighten our awareness of our surroundings and our lives.

Being hosted first by Carolyn Tillie, the group initially will be based in the city of San Francisco with the intent to establish a network of metalsmiths who are working -- or wish

to work -- in the industry as more than hobbyists. As interest develops, than East Bay, Peninsula, and North Bay groups can also be developed.

So many of us tend to work within solitary vacuums and rely only on ourselves in researching all avenues of the business world; from exhibitions to credit card companies, from materials sourcing to call-for-entries. We plan on gathering together to share our collective information, ask questions, and help each other in our business endeavors. This group is NOT LIMITED to those  already working full-time but is open to any and all artists desiring to make their chosen vocation a full-time endeavor.

Please join MAG Saturday October 24th at 6pm for an engaging hour with Joe Muench, an artist and educator intensively involved in the processes and techniques related to traditional and sculptural metalworking. Joe will be sharing images of and discussing his past and current work, examples of which can be seen in Metalsmith magazines most recent Exhibition in Print.

The lecture will be held at City College of San Francisco's Ocean Campus (main campus), in the Visual Arts building room V-115. The campus is easily accessible via public transportation, and there is parking not far from the Visual Arts building in the large lot on Phelan Avenue.

An Artist’s Business Management Forum Workshop

Course Description:
G-TAC Management Consultants will offer a business management workshop tailored specifically to address business growth opportunities for professional artists.  This workshop, funded through a government grant, gives typically overlooked industries and professionals access to executive-level consulting.  Topics covered during this interactive workshop will include keys to transitioning from entrepreneur to business leader, what it means to think strategically, and how to market your business/art in the most effective and efficient way.

Eligibility Requirements:

To qualify for this workshop, the grant requires that enrollees must:

• Pre-register and provide proof of a state business license.
• Attend the full 8 hours of the workshop.
• Complete mandatory impact survey at the conclusion of the workshop and an identical impact survey 6 months following the conclusion of the workshop.
• Have not participated in this forum during the last 5 quarters.
• Have a professional business in metalworking.

Cost:
MAG Members - $50
Non-MAG Members - $75

Pre-registration is required.  Please contact Maureen Harvey (415-928-3461) for additional details about the workshop including eligibility and workshop location.  Please send your check along with your address, phone number and email address.  You will receive confirmation that you are enrolled in the workshop.

MAG’s policy is any cancellation prior to 14 days of the workshop is eligible  for a full refund; prior to 7 days is eligible for a 75% refund; if lass than 7 days MAG is unable to offer any refund.  MAG reserves the right to cancel any workshop with insufficient enrollment at any time.  If MAG cancels a workshop, you will receive a full refund.

MAG Summer Picnic

David Casella will be hosting at the Boxshop in Hunters Point, located at 945 Hudson Ave. San Francisco 94124
David will be demoing TIG welding techniques on multiple metals, so please bring eye protection for yourself (and to share) to view the demo. Charlie Gadeken will be firing up one of his fire sculptures, and we will also be having a couple drawings during the event. Make sure you enter your name when signing in and be present when the names are announced!

"The Value of Locality"

Damian Skinner will present a talk to MAG focused on "The Value of Locality," New Zealand jewelers, jewelry, and the complexities of being an art jeweler.  The lecture is a prelude to the January/February 2010 exhibition at Velvet da Vinci curated by Dr. Skinner and tentatively titled "Pocket Guide to New Zealand Jewellery." The show and the lecture will feature the work of 17 New Zealand artists including Warwick Freeman, Lisa Walker, and Peter Deckers.

Ira Sherman:
MONUMENTAL SCULPTURE DESIGN FROM A JEWELERS PERSPECTIVE
Thursday, May 14, at 7pm in building C, room 205, at the Fort Mason Center

Please join MAG in a riveting evening with metalsmith and sculptor Ira Sherman as he presents his lecture:  MONUMENTAL SCULPTURE DESIGN FROM A JEWELERS PERSPECTIVE. Ira Sherman is one of the few artist today working in four very diverse metalsmithing disciplines. He is a professional award winning goldsmith, liturgical art designer, designer and fabricator of mechanized sculpture and prosthetic devices, and designer and fabricator of monumental sculpture. Each of these disciplines use very different approaches to how the work is designed and marketed, yet all have similar aesthetic relationships. Sherman will go through a brief history of his works using slides and video and explain how each metalsmithing discipline is related through design, yet built on very different scale.
The lecture will be held Thursday, May 14, at 7pm in building C, room 205, at the Fort Mason Center. The lecture will be free for MAG members, non-members will be asked to pay five dollars.

Mr. Sherman is visiting the Bay Area after presenting a fold-forming workshop at the Mendocino Art Center in Mendocino, CA. The workshop will be held May 8-10.

Michael Good:
Tuesday, April 21 at 7pm, City College of San Francisco, Visual Arts Building, room V115.

MAG members have the fortunate opportunity to observe Michael Good as he presents his complex and beautiful work to us on Tuesday, April 21 at 7pm. The lecture will be held at City College's Visual Arts building, room V115. The lecture will last approximately one hour with a question and answer session at the end. The lecture is free to MAG members, non-members can attend the lecture but will be asked to pay five dollars.

Michael Good, whose name is synonymous with anticlastic raising, has developed and expanded the definition of jewelry and metalsmithing to sculptural forms that are a natural extension of the human form. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania of Belgian parents, Michael is primarily self-taught as a jeweler and sculptor. He has been a goldsmith and teacher since 1969, and has taught workshops for professional organizations, schools, and universities in North America and Europe.

His work is represented in stores, galleries, and private collections internationally.
