TechShop offers training on every piece of equipment in the facility.  The wide range of classes lets you learn how to use the tools and equipment as you need them. Recent and upcoming classes include: Solidworks: an intro to 3D modeling in Solidworks; from art to part, Silk screen printing basics, Making glass beads, An introduction to Adobe Photoshop for the laser cutter, Electronics: microprocessors for makers, Carbon fiber basics, Beginning sewing, Aluminum sand casting, Sandblasting and powdercoating, Tig welding, and Plasma cutting.

TechShop facility features a 15,200 square foot floor plan including classroom and workshop space, a creative brainstorming lounge called "The Hub", a retail store offering convenience materials and consumables, and a large lighted parking lot with space for 75 cars. We are very excited to announce that a new 15,500 square-foot TechShop is opening at 926 Howard Street (near 5th and Howard) in downtown San Francisco in the Summer of 2010!

Annual Student MAGrant
Deadline: April 30, 2010

MAG will award a $500 grant to a full-time, matriculated student showing excellence, potential, and talent in the metal arts. The winner will be given a feature article in an upcoming issue of the Guildletter. Winner will be notified in June.

ELIGIBILITY
-Applicant must be a full-time, matriculated student in metalsmithing program
-Must be a member of MAG or sign up for a student membership ($20)
-Can reside anywhere in the United States

Turquoise: Natural or Otherwise--MAG sponsored lecture

Please join MAG for Turquoise: Natural or Otherwise, a lecture at River of Words Gallery in Berkeley on May 23, Sunday from 1p.m. to 3 p.m. Dayton’s lecture will give an overview of turquoise through history and focus on the fact that 95 percent of all currently available turquoise is not natural. Natural turquoise will be for sale so bring your checkbooks in order to take advantage of this opportunity.

Dayton Simmons has been involved with turquoise since he set his first piece at age 12 in 1975. Twenty years later he moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico and established Silver Day Trading Co. where he is a purveyor of gem grade natural turquoise stones and fine jewelry, a miner, an expert at repair of antique American Indian jewelry and an educator of turquoise.

Don’t miss this year’s MAG Metalsmithing Day--your chance to meet and catch up with fellow metalsmiths, see what MAG has in store for the year ahead, and hear from world renowned artist, June Schwartz.

California Living Treasure & Enamelist JUNE SCHWARTZ will give a presentation on her iconic electroformed vessels and process from paper maquette to enamel finish. Her work is in the permanent collections of the De Young Museum, the Met, MAD NY, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and many others.

Presentation by June Schwartz

Over the decades that June has been creating enamel pieces, her bowls and abstract vessels have come to be synonymous with the medium itself. Working from her Sausalito home studio, Schwarcz begins her process with a three dimensional maquette made out of paper. Next, she builds the vessel using thin copper sheets or metal mesh. She then has the form electroplated to render it sturdy enough to undergo the enameling process. Finally, she carefully applies enamel.

"I'm very drawn to subtle colorations and the quality of light, maybe because I live with a lot of fog -- or maybe I like light behind a little bit of obscurity. Lots of people wish I'd do brighter, stronger things, but by now I figure, 'I'm old and I can do what I want."
In January 2007, June Schwarcz, along with artists Bill Helwig and Bill Harper, was selected to exhibit at the Long Beach Museum in the first major retrospective of American enamel art held in the United States since 1959. Her work is held in the permanent collections of premier art institutions, including the de Young Museum, the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and many others.  She is recognized as a California Living Treasure.  Text from KQED's SPARK blog. Reclamation & Rescue Workshop with Peter Ostwald

When:  January 23rd & 30th, 2010   11am-3pm
Where: Peter Ostwald’s Studio, 2443 Magnolia Street, Oakland

Course Description:  
Reclaim your beautiful stones from ugly settings! Rescue your precious metals from ugly stones!
Create a new piece of jewelry from recycled settings and stones in this two day workshop.  On Day 1, students free stones from settings, melt old settings, and produce a crisp, to-scale drawing of a new piece using Peter’s innovative drawing technique.  On Day 2, students fabricate the new piece based on the finished drawing.  This workshop focuses on the individual student’s project from conception to finished piece.  It is highly recommended that students discuss project with Peter prior to the workshop.

About Peter Ostwald:

Peter Ostwald was educated at Putney School in Vermont and at UC Berkeley. He was trained in jewelry, metal folding and hollowware sculpture by Robin Campbell, Mary Renk, Professor Victor Reese and most recently, Richard Kambuzuma in Zimbabwe. He has sold metal sculpture and jewelry through such stores as Saks Fifth Avenue, the Oakland Museum and Madison Avenue's Kreuger Gallery. Peter has taught metal arts for 35 years including Richmond Art Center and Sierra Nevada College. Peter was founder and director of the metal arts program at John McConnell Technical Institute in San Francisco and was metal arts instructor at the Piedmont Adult School for seven years. He has provided private instruction in metal arts and sculpture at Ostwald Workshops for the past 20 years.

Bring:  Old jewelry/stones to be reworked into a new piece.  Metals can include yellow gold, silver, copper, and brass. Tools and solder are provided but bring your favorite tools and solder if desired.
