History of the Cases
The twelve steel cases were donated to the Metal Arts Guild in July of 2003 by Deborah Lozier. They were created for the exhibition bigLITTLE : Jewelers and Sculptors Making it in Metal at the Oakland Craft & Cultural Arts Gallery in the State of California Building. The exhibition took place during the 2003 Snag Conference in San Francisco. MAG member Susan Galbraith of LuLu metal created the cases with assistance in design from Deborah Boskin and Deborah Lozier.
The City of Oakland Craft & Cultural Arts Department provided funding for the cases through an individual artist grant awarded to Deborah Lozier.
The Metal Arts Guild paid for the fabric inserts. Bill Maltzberger created the inserts.
Vision and Intent
The cases were designed to create an attractive yet secure display option for jewelers and small metal sculptors. One of the biggest obstacles in planning a metals exhibition in alternative spaces is that there are no affordable means for galleries and non-profits to display the work. The vision was to specifically provide display cases for the bigLITTLE exhibition and also to extend this option for future exhibitions so that our field could be more easily displayed through out the community. The idea being that approaching alternative spaces would be more successful with displays already available. Broadening venues for exhibiting our field helps to grow our audience by exposing new people to what we do. Generating funds for MAG through rentals is a positive outcome, but is secondary to the primary intent of providing attractive and secure displays for our work, as a field not an organization.
Guidelines for Borrowing
Private Rentals:
- Individual Mag members organizing a personal exhibition or fair.
- Private Galleries sponsoring for-profit shows.
- All non-metals related exhibitions.
Fees:
Floor Cases & fabric Inserts
with Pedestals:
(36” x 25” x 8.5” on wood pedestals 30” x 18.5”
x 28”)
$10.00 flat fee (loading & handling) per case + $25.00 per case per
week, not to exceed $300.00.
$100.00 per case refundable damage deposit.
Wall Cases & fabric inserts:
(24” x 24” x 6” deep)
$5.00 flat fee (loading & handling) per case + $25.00 per case per
week, not to exceed $270.00.
$100.00 per case refundable damage deposit.
Non-Profit Organizations and Groups:
- Non-profit organizations displaying jewelry and metalwork that is not for sale.
- Schools and Universities displaying group exhibitions of jewelry and metalwork that is not for sale (does NOT include student graduate shows.)
- All fees waived for Metal Arts Guild Sponsored Exhibitions.

Please bring someone to assist you in loading and unloading the cases - or make arrangements withAdam in advance. It takes two people and a truck or van for the floor cases.
The display items listed above are the property of the Metal Arts Guild of the Bay Area. The borrower agrees to return the items, in the condition they were borrowed, by the return date listed. Arrangements must be made in advance for drop off and pick up times. A refundable damage deposit of $100.00 per case is due at time of pick-up. If damage occurs, borrower will be responsible for repair costs. Scratches to plexiglass will be replacement cost of sheet - $25.00 for floor cases, $25.00 for wall cases. Unreturned cases will result in loss of deposit. Lost keys are $5.00 each.
