Seeking Employment

I have recently moved to the Bay Area from New Orleans, where I worked for Thomas Mann Design, Southern Style Monograms and Bernard Passman Galleries. I am the kind of person who enjoys starting the workday(its true), I am intelligent, able to adapt and absorb the methods of others(ie take instruction),I have a good eye and steady hand and am patient and careful. I will be entirely honest (though it has been explained to me that when seeking a job one, should exagerate a bit, and thus i am putting myself at a handicap) I have never set stones. But i am experianced in all 'grunt-work arts'... polishing, soldering, production etc...

I am like a brand-spanking new laptop...ready to work just give me the instructions. I am very eager to learn new skills so as to better my skill set.

Metal Arts Guild Call for Entries

The Society for Midwest Metalsmiths' International Metalsmithing and Jewelry Exhibition, METAL Inclinations.

Exhibition Flyer (PDF)

METAL Inclinations
Deadline for images: June 30, 2008
Artists notified: September 1, 2008
Debuts online October 31, 2008
Runs at least from: Oct. 31, 2008-Oct 31, 2009

For more information: www.smm-metalinclinations.org

The METAL Inclinations Exhibition will be a completely online show. The application process, the jurying, the digital images and the exhibition itself will all be carried out using the Internet. Juried Arts Services will be handling the application process.

The jurors for the Metal Inclinations exhibition are:

  • Michael Monroe, a well-known and highly respected figure in the crafts community, now head of the Bellevue Art Museum in Seattle, Washington, former head of the American Craft Council and former curator-in-charge of the Smithsonian Institution's Renwick Gallery in Washington D.C.
  • Marilyn Da Silva is a professor and program chair of the jewelry and metal arts department at California College of the Arts in Oakland, California
  • Susie Ganch is currently Assistant Professor and Head of the Metals Program at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond Virginia.

We ask that all work be original and made by the metal artist. Items in the show can be items already sold, because we do not need the actual piece.

There will be a "Gallery" page of all 50 of the chosen pieces, plus each selected artist will receive their own "Artist's" page with a blow-up of their digital image, their artists statement and a link to their website or an email address. The images will remain in the exhibition even if they are sold from the artist's website during the show. SMM does NOT receive a percentage of the selling price.

We plan to keep the METAL Inclinations Exhibition on the World Wide Web for at least a year. That's a whole year of exposure to collectors, gallery owners, buyers, show promoters and editors for the selected artists.

We're working hard to reach as many metalsmiths and jewelers worldwide as possible. There are many dedicated metalsmiths helping us with this project. Please join us by downloading the Exhibition Flyer and passing the word along.

Thank you very much, Dayne Sislen International Exhibition Chair METAL Inclinations www.smm-metalinclinations.org midwest.metalsmiths@gmail.com

MAG is looking for a few volunteers to help the Metal Arts Guild grow.

Expand your professional network while developing your business skills with MAG mentors as your guide. Our experienced Board members will help you in these new roles.

Currently the Board would like to fill positions for Programs and PR/Advertising. More than one person can volunteer for each committee. Many hands make light work! Share the job and learn together. Meet people . . . and have fun.

PROGRAM COMMITTEE: The Programs Committee’s primary responsibility is to arrange 2-3 lectures per year. This is a great way to connect with people throughout the metals community and help the speakers get where they need to go. Other possibilities might be arranging a gallery tour or organizing a workshop of interest to us all. Any of the advance work can be done from your home or studio.

PR/ADVERTISING COMMITTEE: PR/Advertising helps raise awareness of our events in the S. F. Bay area and Northern California metals community. We already have a contact list. This work can be done from your home or studio.

If you are interested in learning more or joining the Board, contact
Alison Antelman, MAG President
at: alison@antelman.com
or 510-704-1905 P.S.

On Sunday November 11th we are having a Board retreat to “brainstorm” future goals for the Metal Arts Guild. You are welcome to join our camaraderie, thinking and eating for all or part of a day.

The Holiday Show at Velvet da Vinci Gallery
December 1 to December 24, 2007

WHAT:
Velvet da Vinci is celebrating the holidays with new work by accomplished gallery artists. This carries on the tradition celebrated by Velvet da Vinci for the last 17 years. In addition to the featured jewelry and sculpture the gallery will present its annual artist ornament show.

Todd Reed and Petra Class will be two of the many artists on display. Petra Class is a skilled, German-trained metalsmith. In Petra’s jewelry she creates a wealth of rich color using gemstones and 22 karat gold.

Todd Reed uses raw diamonds in his jewelry as a way to question the fascination with diamonds used as a status symbol in our current society. He believes the “most perfect cut” is still the uncut diamond.

Revere Academy Offers Classes in Metal Clay
Summer 2007

"We are very pleased to add PMC to our curriculum, with an expert of Lorene Davis's caliber." states Alan Revere, Director of the Academy. Don't miss this unique opportunity to learn from a professional about this exciting material.

Registration is limited. Reserve your space today! Call 415-391-4179 or register online at https://www.revereacademy.com/forms/registration1.html

METAL CLAY 1: INTRODUCTION New Elective
9 am - 5 pm on Sept 7 $169 + $105 kit
Metal Clay is an extraordinary new material for jewelry makers. Essentially a suspension of microscopic fine silver (or gold) particles in an organic binder, the material transforms from clay to metal upon firing. Metal Clay’s ease of workability and firing, and its capacity to pick up textures, make it unique. The material opens up vast
possibilities for makers, in many cases without equivalent. Learn to create several key projects: a hollow bead, a syringe-drawn charm and a
double-sided silver pendant with dichroic glass. 7 hours

METAL CLAY 2: INTERMEDIATE New Elective
9 am - 5 pm on Sept 8 $169 + $110 kit
Building on the skills covered in Metal Clay 1, you will learn to manipulate silver metal clay with greater detail and precision and create more complex projects. Students make a hollow-form amphora, a torch-fired ring, and create a mold for production work. Prerequisite: Metal Clay 1 or experience. 7 hours

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions!

The Crucible invites you to volunteer for the

2007 Fire Arts Festival!

July 11–14, 2007

Since our beginning, volunteers at The Crucible have made year round events possible. In donating your time, expertise and energy, you not only make our seasonal events succeed but you give yourself the opportunity to connect with other creative people you may otherwise not have met. Presently, we are looking for volunteers to participate in the 2007 Fire Arts Festival, to be held July 11th - July 14th. There are numerous ways to volunteer before, during and after the event for day and evening shifts. We need people to help with set-up, clean-up, and ticket sales, will call, and youth escorts just to name a few.

Volunteers who participate in our Fire Arts Festival during the evening events held July 11-14 do not accrue volunteer hours. Hours volunteered during these events cannot be redeemed for volunteer benefits such as class discounts or membership. Set-up and clean-up volunteer shifts do accrue a volunteer benefit. However MAG Members do get 10% off a class already.

To volunteer, please fill out the application on our website (http://www.thecrucible.org/volunteer/vol_app_faf07.php) or send your name, email, and phone contact to volunteer@thecrucible.org. A volunteer coordinator will contact you for scheduling and to answer your questions.

Non-discrimination policy: The Crucible does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, sex, national or ethnic origin or sexual orientation.

Call for Gallery Images

Modern Jewelry from Modular Parts
Lark Books seeks images of contemporary jewelry for publication in the gallery portion of a book tentatively titled Modern Jewelry from Modular Parts, scheduled to be released in the fall of 2007. By "modular jewelry," we mean metal jewelry assembled from small-scale, readymade parts. Materials used can include: sliced hollow tubes and solid rods of various profiles and thicknesses; sheet metal blanks or perforated metal sheets; and commercial components such as metal fasteners and washers. Other materials will also be considered. We accept high-quality transparencies, 35-mm slides, and high-resolution digital images. All visuals submitted must represent work that is original in design. Recent work is preferred. A maximum of five entries per artist is allowed. Artists whose work is selected for inclusion will receive full acknowledgment within the book, a complimentary copy, and discounts on the purchase of books. Artists retain copyright of their work. No fee is required.

Seeking #2 pencils

Any and all used pencils, including broken, chewed, eraser-less, and worn down to a nub.
I need over 30,000 pencils to assemble a new sculpture about education and test taking.

  • Clean out your junk drawer of leftover pencils;
  • Rub out memories of erasers too small for mistakes in life;
  • Protest the tyranny of standardized tests.

Ask local schools, students, or teachers to help.

Share or send this email to anyone and everyone else who might like to participate and contribute pencils.

Send pencils to artist:

Harriete Estel Berman
www.harriete-estel-berman.info
657 42nd Avenue
San Mateo, CA 94403-5059

If you include your name, address and email, I’ll send you a card of the finished piece. If you would like to write a comment about your experience with standardized tests, send a statement with your pencil contribution.

  • The testing industry is calculated to be a $400 million to $700 million industry.
  • In 2001, the New York Times reported that the U.S .Department of Education set aside $400 million to help states develop and administer the tests that the No Child Left Behind Act mandated for children in grades 3 through 8. Among the likely benefactors of the extra funds were the four companies that dominate the testing market .
  • Do you know that Educational Testing Service (ETS), best known for its administration of the SAT college-entrance exam, won a three-year, $50 million contract in October 2001 to develop and score California's high-school exit exam?

Suzannah Murray from New Orleans

I am trying to gather donations of uneeded beads for a really important New Orleans cultural group, the Mardi Gras Indians, that has been struggling since Katrina.

"For more than 250 years, the "black Indians" of New Orleans have sung the ancient chants and donned the opulent costumes of a culture unique in the United States. Dubbed Mardi Gras Indians more than a century ago, they have nurtured the ancient rituals of Africa and the Caribbean in Louisiana, merging them with the rites of another marginalized people: Native Americans." I have put links to more information on them below, but basically they hand-sew elaborate beaded costumes that run about $4,000 in materials; the more expensive top $14,000.

I thought one way to help would be to donate all my unused beads to them for these elaborate mardi gras suits. I spoke with Chief Darryl Montana of the Yellow Pocahontas "Hunters" Mardi Gras Indian Tribe, and I thought he would be a great person to give any beads, sequins etc to so he could distribute them around to make their suits. Anyhow, I was hoping the Metal Arts Guild would be the perfect group to ask to help get any uneeded beads together so I could give it to him. If you could run an article about it in your newsletter, it would mean a lot to me.
look forward to hearing from you,

The Art of AJDC 1 hour
Saturday, Apr. 28, 2007 6-7 pm
Instructor: Alan Revere
Skill Level: All
Seats Remaining: 41 of 50 Total Seats
Price: $0.00 Total Cost: $0

This FREE hour long PowerPoint presentation is a visual delight. AJDC is a non-profit educational organization composed of highly respected jewelry designers. AJDC's mission is to raise the awareness and appreciation of the artistry of fine jewelry. Each year the group chooses a design theme for which members create one-of-a-kind pieces. The projects are for exhibition, only and they are not for sale. The projects are meant to stimulate both the artist and the viewer to think beyond common limits and elevate jewelry expression to the realm of fine art. The results are spectacular, with members employing the finest craftsmanship and materials, as a painter would work from his palette. No other association of designers comes together and invests so much for an annual challenge like the AJDC's design project.

While diamonds, gold, and platinum are used frequently in these pieces, members do not limit themselves to traditional materials. Wood, glass, photographs, Plexiglas, ball bearings, springs, mirrors, nuts and bolts, and even water have found their way into AJDC projects. While the polished metals and lustrous gems sparkle and have considerable value, it is the range and expression of human creativity that shines most in this collection. Alan Revere is president of AJDC.

Make it a MAKER Summer!
by Don Stuart

MAKER takes place June 9-12, 2007. For more information go to: www.makerworkshops.com Please contact Jack da Silva at: www.makerinformation@yahoo.com

Specialized workshops are a wonderful way to upgrade skills. During the summer there is a tantalizing array of them and, for metalsmiths, one of the most exciting is MAKER held every June near San Francisco. The 9th annual MAKER will take place June 9-12, 2007.

I have watched MAKER develop since it started in 1999. Jack da Silva is the mastermind behind it as it grew from his dream of having a metalsmiths’ retreat like no other- and it is! Most summer workshops offer a variety of media and are often spread out over a large campus. MAKER happens in one building where 7 different workshops happen at once. Yes, only metal! Although generally you participate in one, the interaction amongst all is very possible and extremely stimulating.

MAKER takes place at a YMCA camp set deep in the redwood forests south of San Francisco, just off the magnificent coastal highway. Accommodation is basic – bunk beds in camp cabins, bring your own sleeping bag! Ah, our youth is not all that long ago is it?!!! Hearty meals far from the expected camp fare with lots of fresh California produce- fruits, salads, even avocados- are served in the new dining hall in the center of camp. There are various social events including BBQ’s, campfires, slide presentations of instructors work, and treks to the beach a few miles away to watch the sun boil its’ way into the Pacific while the waves crash and sculpt the shore.

The workshops take place in the old dining hall in Rhode Lodge, perched overlooking the camp. The first day is a symposium format with each instructor sharing a short technical presentation, and then for the remaining days the specialized workshops take place. Stand in one spot and you can watch all the action (try that at any other workshop!!) This year Bob Cogan will have his group making their own Tools for Jewelers and Metalsmiths. In the former kitchen, Deb Lozier creates torch fired exotic and colorful forms Exploring Enamels. In another part of the lodge, Meghan Corwin will lead a rich Forming, Folding and Chasing. Andy Cooperman will open minds to innovative ways of incorporating stones and found objects in your work. Meanwhile in the Main Room Darlys Ewoldt will explore wonderfully Poetic Objects of Containment enhanced with patina processes and Marilyn da Silva helps you to scoop fond memories into uniquely personal Commemorative Spoons. Finally, outside under the canopy of tress, the zany blacksmiths. McNeill & Markarian make music on their anvils. It is hard to imagine that all the tools and equipment are hauled in for MAKER. Jack and his able Crew (of local college students mainly) load up a massive truck with everything needed, imaginable and extraneous, and magically transforms this vacant space into the most amazing studio.

As this location is in the middle of a wilderness area, wildlife abounds. Deer often graze in the camp area. Trails through the woods encourage spontaneous hikes. Lots of space to sit, think and be inspired. A mid day siesta is favored by some as most work into the wee hours on their projects. The camaraderie is amazing!

It’s no wonder so many return year after year!
